The Department of Pathology evolved from  the foundation laboratory unit with which the hospital started operations.  It is now a multi-disciplinary department consisting of four sub-specialties: anatomic pathology, chemical pathology, medical microbiology and haematology and blood transfusion. The department has a crop of brilliant staff who  provide excellent laboratory support to the clinical services, engage in research and have collaborations within and outside Nigeria, including the University of Florida, USA.

5-YEAR TARGETS

1.Commencement of residency training in pathology                                         
2. Immunohistochemical reporting ER/PR status of breast malignancies and other malignancies in general.                                                                                                               3. To handle not less than 2,000 histopathologic specimen per year.
4. To generate credible data for research
5. To have a dedicated complex equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.
6. To be able to perform intra-operative frozen section procedures.
