Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is one of the foundational departments in the Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta, and  the first to commence Residency Training. The department has 43 senior staff and 5 junior staff.

VISION

To provide prompt and high quality Obstetric and Gynaecological services that are second to none in our environment and also to harness the resources (Human and Materials) within the department to achieve excellence in service, research and training.

SERVICES PROVIDED

● Fertility regulation (family planning services).

● Treatment of infertility and other gynaecological problems.

● Maternity care including ANC, intrapartum and postnatal care.

● Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/ AIDS (PMTCT).

● Routine (Elective) and emergency gynaecological operations (Surgery)

 

TRAINING PROGRAMMES

● Residency training

● Internship training

● Training of Medical Students and other Students of Medical related courses from various institutions within and outside the country who come for elective postings / rotation in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

 

RESEARCH

● World Maternal Antifibrinolytic (Woman) trial collaborating site.

● Various other individual researches by residents and consultants.

 

NEEDS

●     Training in Minimal Access Surgery and Assisted Reproductive Technology.

●     Training in Laparoscopy and treatment of preinvasive lesion of the cervix.

●     Operating laparoscope, colposcope and hysteroscope, additional Cardiotocographic machines (CTG machines) and more ultrasound  scan machines

 

5-YEAR TARGETS

*     To become a leading centre of training for highly qualified Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

*     To establish a gynaecological oncology unit for screening, diagnosis and management of

gynaecological malignancies.

*   To be a centre of excellence in Assisted Conception and Fetal Medicine.
